Dear the media: Leo Varadkar isn’t gay. He’s clearly bi, he’s been fucking all of us over for years

Leooooo

Dear Every news outlet outside of Ireland,

Did you know that Leo Varadkar is gay? Surprisingly not a single news organisation has mentioned that. Odd, considering (as we all know) that sexuality is the most important aspect of a politician.

Sarcasm aside, just about every non-Irish news channel that is reporting on Varadkar becoming Taoiseach (Prime Minister for any non-Irish people reading) is going with the angle “Backwards Catholic Ireland is finally moving into the 21st century by electing its first openly gay Prime Minister”.

Besides showing a severe lack of knowledge about how our political system works (we didn’t elect the guy, his party did), it paints Ireland as just now becoming accepting of gay people, and also ignores the fact that Leo Varadkar himself is a terrible person.

Varadkar is far more “conservative” than the average Irish citizen.

Firstly, in 2016, in an Irish Independent profile, Varadkar was asked if abortion is a class issue, due to the fact that currently, the only people who can get an abortion are those who can afford to travel overseas to get one. His response? He laughed and said “I don’t know what that question means.” Whatever your feelings on abortion, I think most of us can agree that that is not an acceptable response to such a serious and delicate topic.

Ireland has the fourth-highest rate of suicide among young people. Last year, then-Minister for Health Leo Varadkar cut the mental health budget for the country by €12 million. Real progressive, Varadkar. Thankfully, the cut was reversed after public outcry.

Just last month, Varadkar said that he wants to ban people working in “essential” public-sector services from striking. Knowing the current conditions nurses in this country are forced to work in, this is outrageous. Taking away possibly these people’s only way to improve their working conditions? That’s social progress, alright.

The most annoying facet of the nature of these headlines, however, is that Leo Varadkar is more anti-gay than most of us citizens. Ireland has been accepting of gay people for years.

Two years ago, we became the first country on the planet to legalise gay marriage by popular vote. And it passed by a landslide. 62% of people voted yes, with a turnout of more than 60%. Further, the only constituency in which the no vote passed, only had 51.4% of votes. So we can reasonably assume that around 60% of Irish people have no problem with gay people. Way back in 2010, we introduced civil partnerships.

You know who does have a problem with gay people? LEO VARADKAR. In 2009, he said“Two men cannot have a child, two women cannot have a child… That is a fact, nobody can deny otherwise. Every child has a right to a mother and father, and as much as possible, the state should try and vindicate that right, and that the right of a child to have a mother and father is much more important than the right of two men, or two women, to have a family.” This is the exact kind of idiotic garbage the “No” voters spewed during the time of the marriage referendum.

So yes, we are a progressive country that values gay people, but no, we did not elect our first openly-gay Taoiseach. We got stuck with him. If anything, Leo Varadkar will mean several steps backwards for Ireland in terms of social progress. He has shown that he doesn’t value workers, the unemployed, people with mental health issues, or gay people.

But hey, at least he likes penis, and that’s what really matters, right?

Regards,

Sean (With a fada)
